Softshell is a bonded fabric, usually a face cloth laminated to a fleece back, and that join is what you are stitching through. Done without care the layers can separate slightly around the needle holes. Done with the right backing and needle it stays sealed and the logo sits proud of the nap rather than disappearing into it.
